Audio Tour
Start exploring with my 45-minute audio walking tour of Edinburgh’s queer history. Download VoiceMap on the App Store or Google Play to experience the tour as you walk the historic streets of Edinburgh, or listen from home anywhere in the world on the VoiceMap website.
VoiceMap uses GPS to play the audio as you go, so you can truly immerse yourself in our city and its hidden LGBTQ+ history sites without being glued to your phone screen.
The app is free to download, and the tour is priced at $6.99 (USD). Pricing may vary with the exchange rate in other currencies.
Scroll down to see some of the highlights! I hope you’ll love this tour as much as I loved creating it.
Jacob’s Ladder
Begin on Regent Road with my favourite view of Edinburgh. We’ll start by exploring how the law in Scotland has changed over the years to become more inclusive of LGBTQ+ people.
Calton Hill
Head up Edinburgh’s iconic Calton Hill (don’t worry, it’s not very high!) for stunning views of the World Heritage Site. You’ll learn about the long history of cruising in Edinburgh and the community’s response to the Aids crisis of the 1980s.
Pink Triangle
Head down to the area known as Edinburgh’s “Pink Triangle”, home to many of the city’s queer venues both now and in the past. One the way, you’ll discover how activists in the eighties fought Margaret Thatcher over her infamous anti-gay law, Section 28.
Broughton Street
Wander down Broughton Street, the heart of queer Edinburgh past and present. We’ll duck down some side streets to discover Edinburgh’s hidden queer history spots, from the location of Lavender Menace (Scotland’s earliest queer bookshop) to the gathering place for our first ever official Pride march. We’ll finish on Broughton Street at the former site of Scotland’s first Gay and Lesbian Centre.
